In the IELTS Academic and IELTS academic exams, two of the four categories of tests differ in reading and writing. Speaking and listening are the same for both types.

In the IELTS Academic Reading section, you will need to read three longer and more complex texts in the General Learning Exams than four or five shorter and simpler texts.

The writing part of the academic exam gives you a chart or sketch that you should describe in about 150 words. The IELTS exam will cover three important aspects: structure (the essay will cover at least three paragraphs), vocabulary (compared to the usual words used in conversation, the use of several “high register” words is important) and fluency.

The talk portion consists of three parts, usually from 11 to 14 minutes. Each person has a candidate registered with the examiner and interview.
